3. THE ORIGINS OF COPENHAGEN’S CITY NAME

When Copenhagen was still a fishing village, it was known just as “Havn”, which means “harbor”. However, in the late 12th century, after building strong fortifications to protect from pirates’ attacks, trading became very important. Consequently, it started to be known as Køpmannæhafn, “merchant’s harbor,” which was later shortened to København, or Copenhagen.
