What’s incredible about Spain is that, everywhere in the streets you will find people in a cheerful mood. If you add amazing light and firework shows, you will get New Year’s Eve in Barcelona!

One of my favourite ones is the Barcelona’s official New Year’s Eve celebration that once again will take place at the Magic Fountain of Montjüic, next to Plaça Espanya. Musical sequences at the fountains will kick off the event from 9:30pm until the beginning of the show. What to expect next? At 11:45pm a 30-minute sequence of lights, fireworks, water and aerial elements will bright the darkness of New Year’s Eve in Barcelona and turn the night into an exciting event for the whole family! The cherry on the top? The event is completely FREE!

How to get there? The best way is simply take the subway to Espanya station (red line L1 or green line L3). However, if you want to avoid the crowd at the exit of the station, you’d better get off at Tarragona station at keep on walking for a couple of minutes.

NEW YEAR’S EVE IN BARCELONA WITH KIDS: TRANSPORTS

Due to the traffic and the cava (the traditional Spanish sparkling wine), the best way to move around Barcelona on New Year’s Day is through public transports. Moreover, just for the night between December 31 and January 1, the metro will be exceptionally open all night long. Check the official TMB website to be updated on the latest transportation news for New Year’s Day in Barcelona.

Kids will surely love the most famous tradition for New Year’s Eve in Barcelona: the 12 grapes eating. Following the tradition, if you manage to eat a grape at every dong of the bell (12 dongs, or campanadas, in all), you will get good luck for the following year. Does it sound easy? Wrong! It’s incredibly challenging, but kids will have fun trying to do it!
