Southern Italy tour: the trulli houses of Alberobello with Tapsy Tours

The trulli are mortarless constructions, characterized by coned roofs as well as by mysterious pinnacles and calcareous signs. They were initially used as stables for animals or to store agriculture tools. Alberobello is especially famous for its trulli because it’s the first town that started employing these constructions as houses.

HOW TO GET TO THE TRULLI HOUSES OF ALBEROBELLO

The best way to get to Alberobello is either by train or car. If you decide to get to Alberobello by car, you’d better leave the car just outside the town in a pay and display parking and keep on by foot or bicycle. If you prefer to go by train, you can take a regional train to Alberobello from Bari or Taranto.

For the airplane lovers: the nearest airport is in Bari or Brindisi, therefore you will also have to get to the train station to catch a train to Alberobello.

WHAT TRULLI HOUSES OF ALBEROBELLO YOU CAN’T MISS

Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and as you get there, you will understand why! However, some of the trulli houses of Alberobello are especially worth seeing: Aja Piccola, the small area consisting of 400 inhabited trulli, il Trullo Sovrano, the two floor trullo, la Chiesa di Sant’Antonio, the trullo used as a church, and the Trulli Siamesi, the trullo made of two joined trulli.

There is also a building that is not a trullo, which is worth visiting: La Casa d’Amore. This is the first house built in Alberobello using mortar and it is currently hosting the Department of Tourism of Alberobello.
