3. THE ORIGINS OF COPENHAGEN’S CITY NAME
When Copenhagen was still a fishing village, it was known as “Havn”, which means “harbor”. So, why did the name change so much as to “Copenhagen”? You won’t believe it, but it’s all about pirates. The capital of Denmark was in fact so vulnerable to pirates’ attacks that in the late 12th century strong fortifications were built to protect it. Since trading became very important in the nascent city, in started to be known as Køpmannæhafn, “merchant’s harbor,” which was later shortened to København, or Copenhagen.
